Workshop:                                                                                                                                            

Translating for museums and galleries - managing intercultural complexities

The workshop will be run by  Dr Robin Cranmer, Senior Lecturer in Intercultural Communication at the University of Westminster, London.

This workshop will aim to increase students’ awareness of the range of intercultural challenges translators can face when working on briefs for museums and galleries and to refine their decision-making abilities in relation to some of these challenges.

 

The workshop will start with activities, partly revision and partly new input, designed to raise awareness both of the range of ‘textual’ challenges for the translator in this context which are in some sense ‘intercultural’, and of those challenges which concern the interaction between the translator and the museum or gallery. It will also highlight potential ways in which these two types of challenge can impact on each other. 

 

Activities will then focus on the management of these intercultural challenges and on refining decision-making abilities in this area.

 

Students will be given a sample translation brief from a museum or gallery with the task both of making appropriate translation decisions in interculturally challenging areas and of suggesting ways to manage the intercultural complexities of interaction with the museum or gallery.

 

The workshop will be largely student-centred with students being required to work together to generate ideas and to make decisions relating to translation briefs.

ASSIGNMENT

 

In groups of 4 you will add 2 soundtracks to the promotional video for Massafra:

Your brief is to make the video as accessable as possible through the addition of sound.

You may also decide to add subtitles

 

1 in English and 1 in Italian

 

The soundtrack may be organised as you like: a scripted monologue or dialogue;

and may be 

- for children or adults

- for sighted or for the blind

- for an aspirational language group or mother tongue language group

- didactic, entertaining; informative/persuasive; ....

- monologue/dialogue, scripted, an interview (the expert talks..); a play,.....

 

You have up to 1 month (27/03/16) to complete the video audio which should be sent to david.katan@unisalento.it complete with script and short (max one paragraph) of aims and rationale for your script.

 

The best videos will then be presented at Massafra in April at an international conerence, and you will be invited to be present at the screening.
